How Self Published Books Are Created And Marketed

image1 150x150Self published books are starting to make up an ever larger proportion of the market, and it is easy to see why. There has never before been an opportunity like the one on offer through the Internet, where anyone can create a book using free software and get into print within a few short weeks. If some of the authors from previous eras, who spent years sending their best work to publishers only to have it continually rejected, saw the opportunities on offer today, they would be positively green with envy. This opportunity is one which virtually anyone can take advantage of.

It is important to realize, though, that there is a world of difference between getting your book into print, and having it sell well. The very mechanism which is allowing you to get your book in print is also allowing thousands of competitors to do the same. If you are just looking to get your creative expressions into print, and are not that bothered about the commercial side, you will find the system ideal, but if you are ambitious you will need to plan well. Learning to carry out good market research and writing what the public wants are vital if you are to succeed.

The traditional publishers and the printed book market should never be overlooked, especially if you have serious ambitions as a commercial writer. It is extremely difficult to penetrate, probably even more so than in previous decades, but it can be done. The one huge advantage modern writers have is that they can approach the problem on many different fronts, and use multiple methods to try to bring their work to the attention of the publishers. Your self published work can also act as a sales portfolio.

Creating a self published book through the Internet is easy enough for anyone to do, but there may be a steep learning curve for anyone new to the process. It is the actual creation of the book in the first place which is the difficult part, and the graphics software can take some getting used to. Photoshop is expensive software, but it is the best program to use. The job can be done with free graphics programs, but they lack documentation and are not easy to learn.

Once your self published books have been proofed and made live in the marketplace, they will need to be brought to the attention of potential buyers. This can be done with offline advertising, but unless the book has a huge market this is unlikely to be cost effective. Being active in online forums or groups, social networking with like minded people, and creating a blog with some free content are all good ways of getting the word out about self published books.
